The Americas

RHS Team Rider Shaun Wallbank fills us in on his recent travels...

Over the last six months I road-tripped down the west coast of the US and Mexico. We had some great waves and fun times, punctuated by the Southern California/Northern Mexico region.

Canada and the north coast of the US were beautiful but didn’t provide much in the way of waves. Most of the time I was hiring longboards and just checking out the sights.

By the time we got to San Francisco there were some waves along Ocean Beach and the vibe around the coast is really cool with beach fires and cruisey nightlife every night.

When we hit Southern California the waves really started to pump. We spent a week at Trestles surfing with the World Tour athletes who were on their warm up for the Hurley Pro. We then spent the next week watching the Hurley Pro which was sick.

All in all it was the best trip I’ve ever done but it was really good to come home – we’ve had some great waves already this year and it’s just the start of South West swell season so fingers crossed!

Volcom partnered up with Colony 47 in Hobart for this year's Give Jeans a Chance denim donation for the homeless initiative.

Red Herring Surf donated some jeans to the drive and Volcom came down to help give away the jeans to very worthy recipients at Colony 47's Elizabeth St office.

This event coincides with the launch of National Homeless Persons Week which runs from Monday 6 August to Sunday 12 August. The theme of this year's campaign is HOMING IN on the real issue of homlessness in Australia.

Surf test-ride makes splash

Newspaper article in The Mercury, June 18th, 2012....

Surf test-ride makes splash

You can test-drive a car before handing over your hard-earned cash, so why not test-ride a surfboard before you splash out on a new one?

To encourage shoppers to buy in-store rather than over the internet, Tasmanian surf chain Red Herring now has a 'try-before-you-buy' system for surfboards, giving surfers the chance to trial boards in different lengths, shapes and materials before committing to buy.

"People can't try a surfboard online, but they can with us," owner Victor Tilley said.

"This gives them a chance to test-drive one without laying down a lot of cash.

"It has been a total rethink about how we sell surfboards. Customers aren't taking as much of a punt now as they might have previously. And we've also changed our pricing structure to compete in the global economy."

Mr Tilley said the program, coupled with the company's new global pricing policy, had led to increased board sales.

With help from manufacturers and distributors, he'd like to expand it to include equipment such as wetsuits.

Australian Retailers Association Tasmanian spokesman Robert Parker, who is also general manager of Habitat homewares stores, said the program was a good example of a local business taking innovative steps to remain competitive.

He said in-store demonstrations, better customer service and increased product knowledge were other ways to entice customers to shop in-store.

"We need to be more innovative in how we engage customers, and make them feel comfortable and confident in buying locally," he said.
